ESTO STUDIO
ESTO is a Madrid-based creative studio founded by Guillermo Borreguero and Amalia Wakonigg, working at the intersection of design, craftsmanship, and experimentation. Rooted in backgrounds spanning fine arts, product design, scenography, and architecture, the studio approaches each project as an open investigation into materials, processes, and form. From their workshop in Carabanchel, ESTO designs and fabricates furniture, objects, installations, and spatial interventions where technique and expression coexist without hierarchy. Making is central to their practice: ideas are developed through hands-on experimentation, direct engagement with materials, and a close relationship with fabrication methods. The studio functions as both a design practice and a laboratory, where curiosity guides each step and outcomes remain deliberately open-ended.
This approach is clearly embodied in Disguise Series 00, a collection of sculptural seating pieces that blur the boundary between furniture and fiction. Built around simple tubular steel structures, each piece is “dressed” in a hand-sewn, spiky textile cover, transforming the recognizable into something strange and animate. The act of covering becomes almost ritualistic, granting the object a new identity, half functional object, half creature. The pointed textures evoke natural morphogenesis, where subtle variations through repetition generate organic, almost living patterns. Chairs, benches, and stools form a family of disguised forms that inhabit space with their own language, suggesting movement, presence, and emotion. Produced entirely in ESTO’s Madrid workshop, the series reflects the studio’s interest in process-driven design and material storytelling. Rather than seeking spectacle, ESTO invites a primal, intuitive connection, similar to the instinctive bond we feel toward familiar forms in nature. Through works like Disguise Series 00, the studio redefines the everyday, proposing objects that do not simply occupy space, but actively inhabit it, quietly unsettling, playful, and deeply tactile.
