HUN LEE

Hun Lee is a Korean object designer based in the Netherlands whose work explores how materials carry stories, through their origins, their transformations, and the traces of their production. His practice reinterprets the inherent characteristics and embedded narratives of matter, questioning how everyday objects operate within society and culture. Balancing playfulness with rigor, Lee creates sculptural, tactile pieces that subtly shift the atmosphere of a space. Rather than pursuing decoration, he treats object design as a form of material storytelling, where curiosity and precision coexist. Each work proposes a new relationship between form, function, and process, inviting the viewer to look again at what they think they know about familiar materials and the roles objects play in daily life.

Lee approaches making as a translation: he listens to a material’s behavior, then re-codes it into unexpected forms. Humor and lightness often appear as strategies, opening the door to deeper questions about value, use, and cultural meaning.

At the core of Lee’s work is the idea that production is never neutral. Techniques, tools, and industrial logics leave marks, physical and conceptual, that become part of the object’s identity. By foregrounding these traces, he turns process into language and material into narrative. Objects may feel whimsical at first glance, yet they are built with careful control of proportion, surface, and tactility. This tension, between the playful and the precise, gives his pieces their quietly subversive energy. They enliven interiors without demanding attention, operating as catalysts for conversation and perception. In Lee’s practice, function is not abandoned, but redefined: an object can be useful and still hold ambiguity, poetry, and critique. Through this lens, his designs do not simply occupy space; they activate it, encouraging new ways of relating to the materials around us and the systems that shape them. Working between the Netherlands and his Korean cultural background, Hun Lee continues to expand a vocabulary where material, process, and narrative merge into contemporary objects with distinct presence.
