MUGEN

MUGEN is a studio founded in 2024 by Sana Alam, born from an exploration of material, form, and their ability to evolve beyond their initial state. Through furniture, lighting, and collectible objects, the studio develops a language inspired by natural transformations and organic forms. Each creation begins with a close observation of materials and their behavior, guided by a desire to reveal what already exists rather than impose a predetermined shape. This approach gives rise to pieces that appear shaped by natural processes and refined through a contemporary perspective. For Sana Alam, design begins when familiar references fade and material finds its own direction. Her work focuses on this transitional territory, where intuition, experimentation, and making contribute to the same search.

Based in India, MUGEN collaborates closely with artisans specializing in stone, glass, and metal. Each piece is developed through a handcrafted process that places gesture, precision, and material knowledge at its core.

MUGEN’s creations are distinguished by a quiet presence, fluid volumes, and a mastery that remains open to unpredictability. Concepts emerge through an intuitive exploration of form, informed by studies of volume, balance, and the inherent qualities of each material. Prototypes are refined within the studio before being brought to life by skilled artisans selected for their expertise. Rather than controlling the material, the process seeks to accompany its natural characteristics so that they become part of the object’s final identity. This attention to time, making, and the intrinsic qualities of materials gives rise to pieces that feel both inevitable and unexpected. Through its work, MUGEN develops a vision of design attentive to permanence, presence, and the sensitive relationship between object, material, and space.
