STUDIO INDIGENE

Studio Indigene is a design studio founded by architects Tanvi Deolekar and Shubham Mestry, based in Mumbai, India. Their practice considers objects of varied scale and function, from furniture and lighting to decorative pieces for daily life. An architectural attention to ratio and proportion informs the work, giving simple lines and curves a distinct identity. Wood is the studio’s primary medium. Its grain, texture and structure guide the development of forms, supported by a restrained selection of complementary materials. Across the collection, solid volumes and carefully drawn profiles make the material itself an integral part of the design.

The designs are realised through close collaboration with skilled woodworkers familiar with traditional carving. Ideas are discussed at the workshop, and techniques are developed to translate drawings into finished objects. This exchange adapts established skills to contemporary forms, sometimes introducing new challenges for the artisans and designers alike. Finishing receives the same attention as carving and assembly, with the natural grain retained rather than concealed.

The collection explores different ways to encounter and use wood. Movable trays bring an interactive element to the Scallop and Sphera coffee tables, while turned forms and glass globes give the lighting its recognisable profiles. Each piece retains variations in grain and surface that distinguish it from another. Studio Indigene values this individuality as part of the user’s experience: an object can be handled, used and appreciated over time. The studio sees its creations as enduring possessions, made to accompany everyday life and eventually be passed on.
