WARTEL

WARTEL

Wartel is a family-led creative studio built on the decision to work together and unite distinct yet complementary forms of expertise. Through constant dialogue and shared reflection, their creative process seeks to fuse deep inspirations, dreams, personal narratives, and technical exploration into singular, powerful objects that assert a strong presence in space. Each piece is conceived as a synthesis of emotion and structure, where concept and execution evolve simultaneously.

Jean-Baptiste Wartel, designer and artistic director, began his career as a musician, composer, and sound designer, working across music and film before fully dedicating himself to graphic arts and object design. Within the studio, he intervenes from the earliest conceptual stages to the selection of materials and the refinement of finishes. His approach brings rhythm, intuition, and narrative sensibility into the design process, shaping objects that resonate beyond their physical form.

Craftsmanship, experimentation, and technical rigor lie at the heart of Wartel’s practice. Each project is driven by a desire to push materials beyond their expected limits while maintaining structural coherence. The result is a body of work where innovation is inseparable from precision.

Fanette Wartel, an art cabinetmaker trained at the École Boulle in Paris, brings a sculptural and tactile sensitivity to the studio. After working in the restoration of antique furniture, she turned toward the creation of wooden sculptures and conceptual pieces. Her fascination with travel and cultural heritage often informs her work, drawing inspiration from techniques and traditions encountered beyond familiar contexts.

Bertrand Wartel, initially trained as an art metalworker before becoming a structural metal engineer, contributes deep technical expertise to each creation. Awarded by the Observateur du Design and holder of several patents, he remains in constant creative motion. His references include figures such as Santiago Calatrava, Marcel Breuer, and Jean Prouvé, designers who placed engineering excellence at the core of their work. Metals, wood, and stone are shaped with extreme precision and respect, all pieces being designed, developed, fabricated, and assembled by hand in the studio’s French workshop. Wartel also collaborates closely with architects and interior designers, producing bespoke pieces tailored to specific spatial visions.
