JAGDISH SUTAR

Jagdish Sutar, the face and visionary behind the studio, grew up immersed in traditional woodworking practices passed down through generations. This early exposure shaped both his technical precision and his deep respect for material, structure, and process. From hand-based woodworking to intricate joinery, his approach reflects a cultural lineage where making is inseparable from identity.

Seeking to expand this heritage through a contemporary lens, Jagdish moved to Italy, where he refined his craft within the epicenter of European design culture. Now based in Milan, he draws from both Eastern traditions and Western design philosophies, creating furniture that balances heritage with modern expression. His work is defined by clarity of form, material honesty, and a quiet sense of elegance rooted in craft.

Collaboration is central to the studio’s philosophy. Working closely with local artisans, Jagdish ensures that each piece carries both technical rigor and human sensitivity. Furniture becomes a vessel for storytelling, where tradition and innovation coexist.

The Sutar family’s legacy extends beyond Jagdish’s individual practice. His father, Mr. Jethabhai Sutar, founded Pratishtha in 1982, laying the foundation for decades of excellence in craftsmanship. This heritage was further expanded by Jagdish’s elder brother, Revant Sutar, who brought the family’s expertise into interior design and contracting. Today, Pratishtha serves as the parent company and in-house production partner for Jagdish Sutar Design Co., ensuring continuity, precision, and uncompromising quality across all creations.

This lineage is celebrated through collections such as Objects of Legacy, a tribute to India’s vibrant craft traditions reimagined through contemporary design language. Techniques such as hand woodworking and Charpai weaving are reinterpreted into modern furniture forms, preserving cultural knowledge while allowing it to evolve. Each piece is not merely functional, but an enduring object of heritage, crafted to be lived with, passed on, and valued across generations.
