SALAK

SALAK

Founded by Alicja Korbut, SALAK is a Polish design studio rooted in architectural training and an uncompromising, hands-on approach to making. Korbut graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (Faculty of Architecture and Design) and built early experience across design studios in Poland and abroad, developing projects spanning residential spaces, cafés, and furniture. In 2020, she returned to Poland to establish SALAK as an independent practice dedicated to unconventional, sculptural furniture. Despite a growing team, Korbut remains closely involved throughout production, from material selection to finishing, and still personally paints and turns spheres for selected orders. This proximity to craft gives each piece a rare coherence, designed, understood, and refined from the inside out.

SALAK takes its name from the salak palm fruit, discovered as a color reference during Korbut’s time in a UK design studio, and later refined into the brand’s signature off-white “salaka” shade. The name also became an informal abbreviation: S (Studio), ALA (Alicja), K (Korbut).

SALAK’s language is defined by authenticity, precision, and permanence. The studio works exclusively with premium steel and solid wood, never plastic, veneer, or MDF, each element hand-selected and shaped through artisanal production. Natural materials introduce subtle variations that make every object singular; each piece carries its own serial number. The sphere, now SALAK’s distinctive hallmark, functions both as a visual signature and a structural statement, requiring patience and technical rigor to execute. Beyond form, the studio is guided by a clear position: furniture should endure, not follow seasonal trends. Since 2020, SALAK’s earliest designs remain present in the collection, steadily expanding their international recognition through consistent craftsmanship, attentive service, and a timeless approach to design.
